Following the implementation of CONFCLOUD-2085, users can now rename the space key in Confluence.
When a space key gets renamed, the old key gets saved as an alias for the current one. This means that the old space key will not get released so it cannot be used again in another space.
Once a user use an alias for one space, we keep a history of those aliases as inactive so that we can redirect saved links and other functionalities using old aliases to the correct space.
Currently, we don't allow users to delete and reuse them for another space, as this may create issues. It would be nice if we could allow users to delete aliases from history.
A possible workaround is to rename the key of the space that contains the key you want to reuse. After renaming, export that space with the new key, then move the original space to the trash and delete that space. This would allow you to re-import the space backup using the new key, and should release the key that was being used as an alias.
